We\u2019re familiar with these kinds of clients, the one who won\u2019t tell you exactly what she wants (just that what you\u2019re doing isn\u2019t quite it\u2026), or the one who isn\u2019t satisfied with anything you try even if it\u2019s what she asked for. From totally unreasonable, unrealistic demands to endless re-dos\u2014picky clients are frustrating.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">But, they\u2019re also a reality of your chosen profession, so there\u2019s no avoiding them (unless you\u2019re super lucky). So how to you deal with a client who doesn\u2019t really seem to be pleased by anything you do\u2014without wanting to just give up entirely and quit?<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"block-yui_3_17_2_1_1563334536306_44811\" class=\"sqs-block horizontalrule-block sqs-block-horizontalrule\" data-block-type=\"47\">\n<div class=\"sqs-block-content\">\n<hr \/>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"block-yui_3_17_2_1_1563334536306_44875\" class=\"sqs-block html-block sqs-block-html\" data-block-type=\"2\">\n<div class=\"sqs-block-content\">\n<h2>A CLIENT WITH UNREALISTIC\/UNATTAINABLE EXPECTATIONS<\/h2>\n<p class=\"\">You know the type\u2014she knows what she wants, and since permanent cosmetics\/makeup is <strong>magical<\/strong>, you should be able to give her anything she asks for, right?<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Nope. And unfortunately, you\u2019re the one stuck breaking that news to her. This client is especially tricky: you can\u2019t give her what she wants, and if you try she\u2019s just going to walk away disappointed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">The best thing to do is sit her down and explain why what she wants won\u2019t work. Sometimes she\u2019s not used to wearing makeup at all or shaping her brows, so she just doesn\u2019t realize that what she\u2019s asking for is unrealistic. And instead of just focusing on what you\u00a0<em>can\u2019t<\/em>\u00a0do, help her figure out a way to adapt the look so it works for her.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"block-yui_3_17_2_1_1563334536306_51436\" class=\"sqs-block horizontalrule-block sqs-block-horizontalrule\" data-block-type=\"47\">\n<div class=\"sqs-block-content\">\n<hr \/>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"block-yui_3_17_2_1_1563334536306_51498\" class=\"sqs-block html-block sqs-block-html\" data-block-type=\"2\">\n<div class=\"sqs-block-content\">\n<h2>A CLIENT WHO\u2019S WAY TOO VAGUE<\/h2>\n<p class=\"\">You\u2019ve probably met her before\u2014the client who just asks you to make her \u201clook good.\u201d It might seem like an awesome job at first: your client is giving you complete creative control! She trusts your professional opinion that you know what looks best.! But once you start working on her, the stress begins to build. Everything you do is \u201cfine\u201d (not \u201cgood\u201d) and you have no idea whether she actually likes your work because she won\u2019t give you any feedback. You\u2019ll never know (she\u2019s certainly not going to tell you!) but you\u00a0<em>can<\/em>\u00a0work on getting her to open up.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Let her know early in the process that she doesn\u2019t have to worry about offending you when telling you what she wants, so she\u2019s totally free to tell you what she thinks along the way. Sometimes a client just needs reminding that although this is your work, it\u2019s\u00a0<em>her<\/em>\u00a0face, and you want her to go away looking and feeling her best!<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">You can also try nudging some opinions out of her along the way. Asking \u201cdo you like this?\u201d probably won\u2019t get her to open up, and she\u2019ll expect you to know what she wants beforehand anyways, so you\u2019ll need to be more specific. Instead, try going through the products you use and the overall process. Once she\u2019s settled on something she does like and is familiar with the prcoess , you\u2019ll have an easier time building a look around it.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"block-yui_3_17_2_1_1563334536306_65039\" class=\"sqs-block horizontalrule-block sqs-block-horizontalrule\" data-block-type=\"47\">\n<div class=\"sqs-block-content\">\n<hr \/>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"block-yui_3_17_2_1_1563334536306_65101\" class=\"sqs-block html-block sqs-block-html\" data-block-type=\"2\">\n<div class=\"sqs-block-content\">\n<h2>A CLIENT WHO DOESN\u2019T QUITE TRUST YOU<\/h2>\n<p class=\"\">She reaches for the mirror every fifteen seconds to check on your work. Even though you\u2019re a professional makeup artist, this girl just doesn\u2019t trust you to do your own job.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Trying to build that trust in the couple of hours you\u2019ve got with her is a tough feat, and reminding her that yes, you do actually know how to do your job won\u2019t get you very far. It might be time to institute a no-peeks policy\u2014stash the mirror out of sight until she can check out the complete feature, since an unfinished eye always looks, well, unfinished.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Like the last client, you\u2019ll also want to try and help her get a little more detailed about her concerns. Asking her \u201cwhat specifically is bothering you about this?\u201d or \u201cwhat are your concerns about my work right now?\u201d gives you an opportunity to explain what you\u2019re doing, reassuring her that you are actually a knowledgeable professional.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"block-yui_3_17_2_1_1563334536306_46706\" class=\"sqs-block horizontalrule-block sqs-block-horizontalrule\" data-block-type=\"47\">\n<div class=\"sqs-block-content\">\n<hr \/>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"block-yui_3_17_2_1_1563334536306_66304\" class=\"sqs-block html-block sqs-block-html\" data-block-type=\"2\">\n<div class=\"sqs-block-content\">\n<h2>It doesn\u2019t matter what this client\u2019s issues are\u2014the bottom line is that she\u2019s just totally unreasonable. Even the best professional permanent cosmetic artists won\u2019t be able to please everyone, so if a client throws a tantrum for something that isn\u2019t your fault, don\u2019t take it personally. When a client is going way over their appointment, is distrustful or treating you poorly, sometimes you may have to draw the line and walk away.
